Dear families,

A year ago today we stood on a stage and made you a promise in white letters on a black screen. I want to tell you what the year taught us.

It taught us that the shoebox is universal. In twelve months, families brought us voicemails saved through three phone upgrades, answering-machine tapes from 1999, sermon recordings, cockpit radio checks, birthday videos filmed sideways, and forty-one minutes of a grandmother narrating a card game. Every archive different. Every archive enough.

It taught us that remembrance has a rhythm. You visit on Sunday evenings and on Tuesday mornings, on anniversaries and on the days that have no name. You come back for the stories, but you stay for the pauses.

It taught us to frame things. In January a letter arrived at our Seattle lobby, written in pencil, three words long: "i herd my mom." We framed it. Then more letters came, and we framed those, and now there is a wall, floor to ceiling and growing, and when the work is hard we go stand in front of it. You built that wall. We just supplied the frames.
