A place to visit: Solace opens its first Parlor, in a Seattle bank built to hold what matters.

Solace Technologies, Inc. today opened the doors of the first Solace Parlor, in a 1907 bank building in Seattle's Pioneer Square. The marble is original. So is the vault — kept, restored, and left standing open, with warm light coming out of it.

A Parlor is not a store. It is a quiet room with low chairs, dark shelving, cedar in the air, and Care Specialists whose only job is to be present. Families can sit with a voice, ask every question they have, and decide nothing at all.

"Grief doesn't keep business hours, and it shouldn't have to shop online. A Parlor is a room where nobody will rush you — that's the entire design brief. We spent two years on the lighting and about eleven minutes on the sales strategy, because there isn't one." — Elena Marsh, Chief Care Officer, Solace

Designed around the first Listening

Every Parlor is built backward from a single moment: the first time a family hears their person again. Consultation alcoves are acoustically isolated. Chairs face each other, not screens. And the house rule, printed inside every break room, is the first line of the company's field guide: you are not a salesperson.

"We trained for months on what not to say," said the flagship's opening-day Care Specialist team lead. "The silence after a family first hears their person again is the most important silence in this company. Our job is to let them have it."

The Reminiscence Suite at retail

The flagship also debuts the Reminiscence Suite: the Stone, a speaker shaped like a river stone, quiet by design, for the porch at six o'clock; and the Frame, in silver wood, which plays nothing until you sit down in front of it. Both are available for in-Parlor listening today.

"Banks were built to make people feel their treasure was safe," said Katherine Voss, founder and chief executive officer. "We kept the vault open on purpose. The most valuable things a family owns were never money."

The Seattle flagship opens today at Pioneer Square, every day, 9 to 9. Additional Parlors will open in communities across the country beginning this year. Watch for the paper to come down.
