Notes on Remembrance

What to record this year (while it's an ordinary year).

Morning light through a kitchen window, coffee steaming, a small recorder on the table

The archives families wish they had are never the speeches. They're the Tuesdays. The people who love you will want all of you — not the tired months, not the hospital voice — and the only time to record an ordinary year is while you're having one.

So: a list. One a month. None takes longer than a cup of coffee.

January. How you answer the phone. That's it. That's the whole recording. It's the sound your family will one day pay anything to hear again.
February. The grace, if you say one — or the toast you always give, even the short version. Especially the short version.
March. Read the recipe aloud while you cook it, commentary included. "That's not enough butter" is heritage.
April. Directions to your house, the old way, with the landmarks that aren't there anymore.
May. The story everyone thinks they know. Tell the real version. Take your time. They don't know the real version.
June. Your half of a ballgame. The bullpen deserves your honesty.
July. The song you hum without noticing. Ask whoever lives with you which one it is; you will be surprised.
August. A walk through the photo album, out loud, including the people you have to squint to remember. Squinting is data.
September. What you actually did all day. The boring version. There is no boring version.
October. The complaint. Every beloved person has one signature complaint. Perform it fully.
November. Who taught you the thing you're known for. Name them. Thank them. They may be in someone's shoebox too.
December. The goodnight. However you say it. To whoever you say it to.

Twelve recordings, one ordinary year, and a fidelity no deathbed marathon can match — because capture quality follows ordinariness, and ordinariness cannot be performed later. Because remembrance shouldn't depend on when you started. But it does.

If you'd rather not do it alone, that's what a Capture Guide is for: four guided sessions a year, secure lifetime storage, sealed Milestones for the moments you can already name, and a locked rate — Solace Pre‑Need, from $12/month. Begin while you're still you.
